BIO I turned 18 this year (2009). I started dancing around June/July 2007. I was teaching myself some popping but as soon as I became a member of Crew 109, I drifted towards breaking. However I was very restricted in my training at home, and I couldn’t find the space or the time to practice breaking so I went back into popping. Soon I found myself training with Jfunk at school every day. Due to school and HSC I couldn’t go to any events or comps. The G-style Downunder comp was my first competition. It had always been my goal to win the first comp I enter. Still cant believe all that training has paid off. In my spare time I do a lot of reading, I also write lyrics (rap), want to start producing music soon as well. I play games once in a while too haha.
INTERVIEW: How would you describe your dance style?
The style that I do is popping. Within the style I do a lot of waving, tutting, botting, cobra amongst other styles. I aim to keep my dancing unique and fresh and experiment to create my own styles. Theres too many copies these days, dancers are losing their individuality and are too scared to experiment and come up with something new.
What continues to inspire you to dance? The will to create, the endless possibilities, the want to push the limits, to set new goals. To entertain and to bring joy. One of the main factors that continues to keep me dancing is the audience. The smiles on their faces, their energy and their laughter keeps me wanting to give them more. I get happiness by giving happiness. As a dancer, what are your goals? To push the limits of popping and dancing to whole new levels. To dispel all misconceptions and to show the general community and the dance community the true meaning of dancing, which is NOT just choreography. To be a positive influence on the scene. Short-term goals would obviously include entering and winning comps, possibly teaching. Long-term goals would include representing Australia overseas in International comps.
What would you say to anyone aspiring to be a dancer? Go for it, nothing is impossible. If your passion is strong enough, you’ll always succeed no matter what. To all those starting out: Stay fresh, try to maintain your individuality in your dancing and aim to be unique. Train hard, sounds cliché but without pain there’s no gain, so train hard, perfect your technique and you will be rewarded. Keep your hopes high but your expectations low. NEVER put limits on yourself. Free your mind and let your creativity take over. How often do u dance? I’m always dancing haha, if not physically then in my mind mentally. Apart from that I try to train around 2-3 times a week, but it varies.
Any shout outs u wanna give? My crew: Crew 109 and my brothers in 109, My mentor Jfunk, My sister Cecil, Chatswood High School and Ms. Lloyd-Green our schools dance coordinator. Without her hardwork and support there would be no King Kurry. My good friend ‘radish’ who has helped through some tough times. JC (Junior Crew), Yovi and Funky Nush.
