BIO

Dennis Ly aka "Danis Kool" has been Popping (Umbrella Term) since mid 2000. A self taught popper, his primary style consist of Animation, Boogaloo, King Tut, Popping, the Robot and Slow Mo.

Residing in the Western suburbs of Sydney he is regarded as one of the leaders in the Australian popping scene. His genuine love and opened mindedness towards the dance makes him an asset to the whole dance community. He has taught, trained and mentored many next generation poppers and showed them "how to teach themselves".

He is also one of the original members of the Hybrid Formz crew (Bankstown) and SEAPUUOG crew and has performed in numerous events such as the Sydney Festival (2009), Platform 2 (2009), World Youth Day Sydney (2008) and the PCYC Gala Dinner (2006). He has also appeared in the music video titled "Some More" by Tegan Rogers feat Audius.

Dennis has entered many battles and competitions throughout his dancing career. One of his proudest moments was winning his first battle competition in 2004 (Dancekool Vol.10) and taking 1st place in the 2008 Looze Control Championships with a Wizard of Oz Adaptation choreography. He also organises major and minor dance events (eg Super Round Box II & III) and has judged many dance battles.

Not only will he be able to bring the funk, he will wow you with his illusional popping style and will make you laugh with his comedic charisma. He is always up for a battle with anyone.

INTERVIEW

How would you describe your dance style?
As you guys probably know my main style is Popping (umbrella term).  If you want to look into it more then it's, Animation, Boogaloo, King tut, Poppin, Robot and Slow Mo

What continues to inspire you to dance?
The other dancers, because everyone is growing. There are a lot younger kids achieving what took me probably a few years to get in ONE YEAR! The scene has definitely changed when i was starting out.... and it wasn't that long ago as well.... 2000 is not that long ago right?

I personally don't want to be left behind or surpassed haha.

As a dancer, what are your goals?

As one of the older poppers in the scene, I have a responsibility to help and guide the dance as it grows. We still haven't really had an Australian popper really represent the country on the world stage (well make it to at least top 8 at a big comp). Hopefully I will be one of those.

What would you say to anyone aspiring to be a dancer?
Honestly if you want to be a dancer (as in work in the mainstream industry), it is very hard. Unless you are able to dance in various styles then opportunities are very limited.

Even if the poppin culture is not in the 'mainstream' the underground culture is still thriving.
But don't quit your day job yet.

How often do u dance?
Before everyday.... now when ever i get a chance (unless im super tired).

Any shout outs u wanna give?

All the Australian Poppers that are keeping the dance alive as well as innovating the style... with an open mind.

CREDITS

I have enter too many competitions to remember... but probably my most proudest moment in a competition was winning my first Dancekool (Vol.10) comp in 2004 and winning last year's (2008) Looze Control with my crew SPG.
